Turn a Blind Eye

Degree Collection 2020

To me fashion, and clothing is the greatest agency of

self-expression. It is also a tool for political ‘speech’, for expressing opinions and a means of storytelling.

This collection, too, is a commentary; caricature; or anticipated future of life even. It aims to reflect on society’s attitude towards fast fashion, ethical issues linked to manufacturing, and the ongoing pollution we all contribute to.

As a designer, I feel it is my responsibility to strive for a sustainable practice and my work to date has dealt a great deal with the subject. From my Thesis on leather and its innovative and sustainable alternatives to my degree collection. I believe it is my utmost duty to use a medium that is environmentally, ethically and economically conscious, both in my use of materials, production and methods. This belief has informed

my choices of organic and sustainable textiles; my use of specialised 3D CAD software to prototype garments virtually, before committing to material sampling, therefore minimising the potential for wasting raw materials; and my use of zero waste construction methods.

Though I am hopeful in nature my aesthetic and design language leaves the viewer with the impression of utter cynicism; a reasonable and merited assumption. One day, we might stop perpetually bearing down on the self-destruct button, but until then, zip up and turn a blind eye. As they say: “If a tree falls in the woods…”
